First, the 60–75% proportion rule: when art hangs above furniture like a sofa or console table, the total frame width should cover 60–75% of the furniture width below. For bare walls without furniture, aim for 40–60% of the wall width. Second, the 57-inch (145 cm) center rule: the center of the artwork should sit 57 inches from the floor — the average human eye level and the standard used by most museums and galleries worldwide.
When hanging art above a sofa or couch, leave 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) of space between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame. This gap keeps the art visually connected to the furniture below rather than floating awkwardly in the middle of the wall.

Wall Art Size Guide by Room
Different rooms call for different approaches to art sizing. In a living room, art above the sofa is typically the largest piece in the home — 36 × 24″ (91 × 61 cm) to 48 × 36″ (122 × 91 cm) for a single piece, or a pair of 24 × 18″ (61 × 46 cm) prints with 2–3″ (5–8 cm) spacing between them.
