How to Choose the Right Wall Art Size
Picking the right size art for your wall is one of the most important decisions in home decorating — and one of the easiest to get wrong. A print that's too small will look lost and unfinished, while one that's too large can overwhelm the space. This free wall art size calculator applies the same proportion rules used by interior designers and gallery curators to instantly recommend the ideal frame dimensions for your wall. It works in both inches and centimeters.
Professional interior designers follow two core principles. First, the 60–75% proportion rule: when art hangs above furniture like a sofa or console table, the total frame width should cover 60–75% of the furniture width below. For bare walls without furniture, aim for 40–60% of the wall width. Second, the 57-inch (145 cm) center rule: the center of the artwork should sit 57 inches from the floor — the average human eye level and the standard used by most museums and galleries worldwide.
When hanging art above a sofa or couch, leave 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) of space between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame. This gap keeps the art visually connected to the furniture below rather than floating awkwardly in the middle of the wall.

Wall Art Size Guide by Room
Different rooms call for different approaches to art sizing. In a living room, art above the sofa is typically the largest piece in the home — 36 × 24″ (91 × 61 cm) to 48 × 36″ (122 × 91 cm) for a single piece, or a pair of 24 × 18″ (61 × 46 cm) prints with 2–3″ (5–8 cm) spacing between them. For bedroom walls, a landscape-oriented print centered above the headboard creates a calming focal point. A 30 × 20″ (76 × 51 cm) or 36 × 24″ print works well above most queen and king beds.
In an office or workspace, a single statement piece at 24 × 18″ or 30 × 20″ keeps the space inspiring without being distracting. Nursery wall art tends to run smaller and sweeter — 16 × 12″ (41 × 30 cm) or 20 × 16″ (51 × 41 cm) pieces work beautifully above a crib or changing table. For apartments and dorm rooms with limited wall space, the calculator is especially useful since every inch — and centimeter — counts.

Gallery walls and multi-piece arrangements follow slightly different rules. For a pair of prints, each piece should be roughly half the ideal total width minus the gap between them. A triptych (three-panel set) divides the same total width into thirds. Our calculator handles all of these arrangements automatically — just select Pair, Triptych, or 2×2 Grid and it recalculates the optimal size for each individual frame.
If you're building a gallery wall, start by arranging your prints on the floor before committing any nails to the wall. Use painter's tape to mock up the frame positions and step back from across the room to judge the proportions. What size art should I put above my sofa?
The art above your sofa should be 60–75% of the sofa's width. For a standard 84″ (213 cm / 7-foot) sofa, that means a total frame width of roughly 50–63 inches (127–160 cm). A single 48 × 36″ landscape print or a pair of 24 × 36″ portrait prints with 2–3″ spacing will typically fall right in that range. Use the calculator above to enter your exact sofa dimensions and get a precise recommendation.
How high should I hang wall art?
The center of the artwork should be 57 inches (145 cm) from the floor — this is the gallery standard used by museums worldwide. When hanging above furniture, position the bottom of the frame 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) above the furniture's top edge. The calculator provides exact hanging measurements including center height, hook placement, and top/bottom positions for your specific setup.
What is a good size for wall art on a blank wall?
For a blank wall with no furniture below, your art should span 40–60% of the wall's width. On a 10-foot (3-meter / 120″) wall, that means a piece between 48 and 72 inches (122–183 cm) wide. A single oversized print or a gallery grid arrangement both work well. Enter your wall width in the calculator with "None" selected for furniture to see your ideal dimensions.
Does this calculator work with centimeters?
Yes. Click the "Centimeters" toggle at the top of the calculator to switch all measurements to metric. All slider values, recommended sizes, the SVG wall preview, and hanging guide measurements convert instantly. The calculator recommends standard print sizes available from most international art retailers in both imperial and metric.
